W e were struck by the poor sanitation and hygiene standards in the village when we fi rst arrived. Because of a water shortage, hot weather, and the presence of many domestic animals, there were swarms of fl ies in all the homes, some even fl ew straight at your face. Everywhere you went, plastic waste was spoiling the scenery. All the valleys near the village were littered with trash.

As we were on our way to Yulo Buchung’s home, we met one of their neighbors (I won’t name her here). She was washing her feet and shoes in a small brook. As soon as she saw us, she put on her shoes and ran to Buchung’s house to crack walnuts so that we could eat the kernels. Holding the kernels in our hands, but with the image of rubber-soled shoes still vividly in our minds, we couldn’t bring ourselves to eat them. After that, whenever we made house visits, we would crack walnuts by ourselves.

We believed that local health habits had to change and this change must come from the village cadres, who would be given towels and soap to keep their faces and clothes clean. The village committee members would be held accountable for trash disposal in the village. A work team would lead by example in burning the plastic package and burying other waste, such as rags, in a landfi ll. We also bought some wet wipes and each of us carried a pack. Whenever we ran into children, we would wipe their faces clean. We stuck with these measures for some time and saw a great improvement. The village cadres were fi rst to change and the amount of plastic waste in the village was greatly reduced.

Still it was not enough: the village committee was currently revising its rules and regulations, so we took this opportunity to found a “Patriotic Health Committee” with them. Like other organization of the same kind in China, public health and hygiene is linked with patriotism to emphasize the signifi cance of the work. The Committee members came from the work team, village cadres and party members in the village. A work team for the Committee was to be formed in each village by the village head and two party members. Every household was to be inspected every week and the four villages would conduct a major inspection monthly. Each house would be graded and those awarded “Good” or “Fair” would receive material rewards. For the rest, we would not name them “Bad”but rather “Needs More Effort”. We had red, pink, and white sticky notes made in Lhasa and after the inspection,
